clock  I had forgotten the utter joys of “springing ahead”. The pilfering of sleep is never, ever acceptable; however, what struck me most this go around was the sheer number of clocks that had to be reset.  You never think about these things unless the power goes out – the oven, the microwave, the bed side clocks, the grandfather clock, and don’t forget the vehicles.  Good grief.  Thankfully smart phones are, well, smart enough to lunge ahead without user input.

Tulip Shafts  With the onset of longer days, warming temperatures, and rainfall, nature has leapt into action, pushing forth Tulips, Daffodils, Daylilies and the like.  Even our lawns are awakening from their seasonal slumber, morphing from brown to green, and the symphony of bird songs confirms nature is about to get busy.  And so should we.

lawn  March 15th – April 15th is the ideal time to seed lawns.  This may seem a bit counter intuitive, considering our frost-free date is generally mid-May, but consider these important facts:  Kentucky Bluegrass takes about a month to germinate and an additional 6-8 weeks to establish.  So, if you do the math, a lawn seeded in April will not be fully established until late June, early July.  Bluegrass is generally blended with fescue and/or perennial ryegrass, each with their own attributes.  These augmented seeds are sometimes referred to as “nurse” seeds.  It is thought they help protect and aid in Bluegrass’s success.  Generally speaking, fescue does better in the shade and perennial ryegrass provides quicker cover.
