Ornamental grasses are pretty darn neat.  In fact, my parents have an entire garden dedicated to grasses, albeit small, it’s a beautiful addition to the landscape.  Ornamental grasses have the ability to add movement to a landscape, something we don’t always consider.  In fact, to play upon that theme, my parents even added “wind art”, so not only are you getting the visual of movement, there is sound to accompany it.  It’s really rather whimsical, and so very relaxing, almost hypnotic. Ornamental grasses  are relatively low maintenance and hardy against pests.  With good drainage, they will grow well in most soils.   Once established, there’s not much you need to do – simply water during periods of drought and cut them back in early spring.

Ornamental grasses are truly versatile.  They can add height, texture, color and year round interest. They can soften hardscapes, provide screening/privacy (some varieties can grow 6-7′), provide a focal point, attract wildlife, especially birds, and act as groundcover.  Placed in planters, they can add panache to your decks and patios.  They truly can fill almost any role within your landscape.

It’s easy to understand why ornamental grasses are gaining popularity. They require so very little but will continue to give back to your landscape all season long.  If you’re unsure how to incorporate them into your landscape, simply reach out to Sweeney’s.  We’ve been singing their praises for years and would love to introduce them to you and your landscape.  It could be just that touch you were looking for.

“I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of the stars.”
